Farm to Glass | Bloom

We were thrilled to feature in issue 8 of Bloom – gardening | nature | inspiration

“I first had my curiousity piqued when I bought a Duration India pale ale with organic beetroot from Bagthorpe Farm in my local beer shop. By the time I visited in summer 2020, they’d settled into a low beamed farmhouse, making some of the best beer in the country, and doing it with nature at the forefront of everything they do”.

“There are around 2000 breweries in the UK now. So what make’s Duration different? Well, brewing has been a very urban business so far, carried out in the railway arches, industrial estates and converted workshops of cities and sold in their trendy bars. In other words, nothing like West Norfolk. What’s more, brewing has not, for the most part, paid muc attention to how it fits into the environment”.

“There’s an open vessel where beer is left exposed for the wild yeasts of Norfolk to float in on the wind and ferment it”.

“We fell in love with everything about West Acre” says Miranda. “It’s utterly enchanting and perfect for farmhouse brewing”.

Bates and Hudson chose it for its water supply (the River Nar), its proximity to all those farms, the trees and rewilding projects on the local estate, and a ready supply of fresh ingredients. They also wanted to make beer that reflected the landscape.
