Sunday Times | 6 Great American Beers

GoodTimes BUNX

Pete Brown, The Sunday Times resident beer expert has picked out this top 6 American beers, brewed by ‘brilliant UK brewers’ – we’re pleased as punch  to say that we made the list!

With so many American styled beers to pick between seeing Good Times on the list feels, well brilliant.

Honoured to be up there with the big hitters Cloudwater, Verdant, Buxton, Thornbridge and Siren! What a list to be part of.

He opens the article with an estute take on the macro versus micro brewers…

Over-hopped, overpriced and over here? It’s tempting to dismiss US beers in terms similar to those applied to GIs posted to Britain in the 1940s. But that would be to trivialise the biggest revolution in the global beer market of the past 50 years. It saw US beer go from being the butt of a bad joke — post-Prohibition lagers got ever blander — to being the most dominant influence in world brewing today.

When home brewing was legalised in 1979, Anheuser-Busch (the maker of Budweiser), Miller and Coors owned more than 80 per cent of the US market, brewing indistinguishable beers. The first generation of home brewers were desperate to taste something interesting so they pilfered the brewing heritage of Britain, Germany and Belgium, creating new flavours and styles. North American hops helped — like the people, they were louder and bolder than their European counterparts.

Drinkers around the world had never tasted anything quite like them: rather than Europe’s more restrained, grassy, earthy notes, they found pine resin and tropical and citrus fruit. They inspired the modern craft-beer revolution in the UK, kick-started by BrewDog and Thornbridge, and similar movements in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain and beyond.

The beers here are from British brewers, but they’re all styles that were invented or drastically redrawn in the US. The flavours are big. The ABVs are high (the American pint is smaller than the British one). No one will like them all. But find the one that speaks to you and it could change your life — like it did mine and every brewer’s here.

Here’s what Pete had to say about our Gluten Free American Light Lager…

Duration Good Times

Craft brewers just had to come up with a better version of the beer they once rebelled against. This is a (gluten-free) refresher that balances lightness with body.
